Create moments of delight with Smart Recommendations

My process
Explore
I met with the Dashboards product designers to learn more about the vision and goals for Smart Recommendations. I looked at the hi-fi designs in Figma, where the designers had written out an idea of what each of the twelve cards should say. When I had questions about the SQL queries for cards, I chatted with an engineer on the team.
Create
Once I had a technical grasp of the cards, I got to work. I created my own copy of the cards and—with the help of a healthy amount of coffee—started to write friendlier versions of each card. If I got stuck on one, I moved onto another.
Flipping the order of information in each card was one of the most impactful decisions I made. The original version of each card had the feature name (like "welcome journey") in the headline. After some trial and error, I found that the cards were more engaging when the feature name was in the description text instead. I ran this decision by my team and they loved it.
It took me about a day to write my first iteration of the twelve cards. Then, I met up with my designers and product manager to get feedback. After that meeting, I delivered my final version of the cards to my team. The cards were launched the following week.
Outcome
The Smart Recommendations cards received great engagement from Attentive's users. The next month, the team added six more cards to the lineup, which I wrote. Not only did Smart Recommendations receive positive feedback from users, the project was also praised by executive leadership and was featured in a company-wide All Hands meeting. Most importantly, working on Smart Recommendations was a fun challenge.
